What Is Handoff, and How Can You Enable It?
In the simplest of definitions, the Handoff feature lets you switch or transfer certain data between all your Apple devices, provided they're both signed in to the same Apple ID. May it be music, a photo, or an email, Handoff lets you transfer data in the exact same state that it was open on your device.
No data is lost when transferring data using Handoff. For instance, let's say you started composing an email on your iPhone and want to complete the rest of it on your iPad. Handoff will transfer the partially-written email and open an entirely identical one on your iPad. Pretty convenient, right?
Enabling Handoff is a quick process. Follow these steps to do so:
- Open Settings and go to General.
- Tap on AirPlay & Handoff.

How to Transfer Photos Using Handoff
Now that you know what the feature is, let us look at how you can use it to share pictures between your Apple devices. While this feature does not work to transfer photos from an iPhone to a PC, there are plenty of other methods to do that. Once Handoff is enabled, follow these steps:
- To copy the photo you want to send, perform a pinching gesture with three of your fingers (similar to how you zoom out of an image.) To copy from Mac, press Command + C.
- To paste it into another device, pinch outward with the same three fingers (like the gesture when zooming into a photo.) To paste on a Mac, press Command + V on the keyboard.
You can paste the photos into any app with an input field, for example, Messages, Mail, Notes, etc.

When you find yourself in a situation with AirDrop not working or without a cellular connection, Handoff lets you share photos in a moment's time. While AirDrop transfers the image to your Photos app, you can choose where to paste your pictures with this feature.
