5 Tips for Removing Digital Distractions

As helpful as tech can be in our lives, it can also be a huge distraction.

Scrolling the feeds, endless notifications, text pings, and the rising count of unread emails all overwhelm and distract us from the more important things in life — like family, friends and fun. You do remember what fun is, don’t you? So how can you be more intentional about cutting down your tech distractions?

Here’s some experiments to try:

Tip #1 — Use the Do Not Disturb setting on your phone.

You can also turn off the ringer or completely shut it down for a while. Blocking off some quiet time each day without the insistent interruptions will give you some space to breathe and maybe even take a nap!

Tip #2—Take a social media vacation for a week or two or longer if you dare.

Taking a short or even longer break from Facebook, Instagram, Clubhouse or TikTok, etc. will help you break your addiction to constantly checking the feed.

Tip # 3 — Take a quick app inventory and ditch apps you never use.

On iPhone go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and you’ll see a list of apps listed by size and last date used. Zero in on the listed apps that hog your memory and you don’t use frequently. Delete them all and say bye bye.

Note: For Android phones go to Settings > Storage > Internal Storage for your list of apps.

Tip # 4— Put your phone to bed and turn it off at a set time each night.

I know this is a radical idea, but you can experiment with it and see how it improves your nightly sleep routine. You may be surprised at how much better you sleep.

Tip # 5—Track your screen time on your phone.

The iPhone has a built in Screen Time setting that you can use to schedule downtime away from the screen. You can choose which apps to allow and what phone calls will be available.

You can also use it to set time limits for apps and communication limits based on your contacts.

Note: On Android phones you can use the Digital Wellbeing setting for this.

Setting limits for when and how much you use your phone and other digital devices puts you back firmly in control rather than mindlessly scrolling your precious time away.

Try it and see what happens!
